CEU course: SD and Global Transitions

2 March 2021 – Ingeborg gave a guest lecture in the CEU (Central European University) course SDGT Sustainable Development and Global Transitions, chaired by Prof. Laszlo Pinter. She presented how SDG implementation works in practice in Europe. On the basis of the SDG study for the EP (2019) she gave an overview of Europe’s approach to implementing the SDGs, illustrated the analytic framework for analysing the governance for SDG implementation and illustrations, and presented country highlights.

First new Beau Lieu Café on 5 April

APR 2023 – On Wednesday 5 April, the first of a new series of high-level talk shows with live band under the name Beau Lieu Cafe will take place, hosted by the Club of Rome EU-Chapter, and co-hosted by PS4SD, from 18:30-20:30 at the Residence Palace (Schumann area). Topic is the report “Earth for All”. This lively talk show will be moderated by former DG Karl Falkenberg and has musical support from the band ‘Time-Tijd’. The three special panel guests on the red sofa are Sandrine Dixson-Declève (Co-President of the Club of Rome International), Kerstin Jorna, Director-General GROW, and Len Ishmael (former ambassador of the Eastern Caribbean States to Belgium and the EU). New report on PCSD published

A study conducted in 2021 by a PS4SD team, resulting in a thematic report for the European Commission’s EUPACK programme on country knowledge on public administration, was published in December 2022. The study contains an analysis of how the SDG indicator 17.14.1 on Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development (PCSD) could be implemented. It has case studies on Finland, Italy, and Romania.  Download report. […]

JULY 2022 – In the report “Constructing assessment indicator dashboards for evidence-informed policymaking: Insights from the perspective of public administration, institutions, and governance”, Ingeborg Niestroy discusses the effectiveness of evidence-informed policymaking mechanisms from the perspective of policymakers, using the lenses of public administration, public management and (sustainability) governance. Mainstreaming SDGs in Regulatory Impact Assessment: report published

From December 2021 until July 2022, thirteen (and ultimately seventeen) EU Member States, the European Commission and the OECD participated in a dynamic and highly interactive project aiming at mainstreaming the SDGs into RIA procedures. On 05.09.2022, Germany decided to finance an extension of the project, until 1st March 2023.

What about the governance of evidence-informed policymaking?

JULY 2022 – How can policymakers make the best of the science they are offered to prepare new policies and laws? This question, focusing on the ‘demand’ side of science-policy-society relations, is less often asked than how the ‘supply’ side can be improved. Louis Meuleman argues in a Blog written for and published by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, that the demand side needs to be taken more into account, and that a dedicated governance framework would definitely support this. HLPF VNR Lab on institutional arrangements

JULY 2022 – At the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on the SDGs in July, the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government of UN DESA organised on 15 July an online Voluntary National Review (VNR) Lab entitled: Looking forward: Recent innovations in institutional arrangements for SDG implementation. As panelist, Louis Meuleman presented some innovative practices, among others the mainstreaming of SDGs in Regulatory Impact Assessments.

Final Event P2P for SDGs in RIA

JUNE 2022 – On 14th June, the (hybrid) final event of the first phase of the project on Peer to Peer for  mainstreaming SDGs in Regulatory Impact Asssessment, financed with a grant from the German Federal Environment Ministry, had participants from 16 EU member states, the European Commission and the OECD. The results of the project, and ideas for follow-up, will be presented at the Council Working Party on the 2030 Agenda, under the Czech EU Presidency.
